Since 2016, Fazela has served as a Public Sector Ethics and Legislative consultant with a career defined by building and defending South African democratic institutions.
For 20 years, she served as Parliament’s lead ethics official. She reported to the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests. She was responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament. During her tenure in Parliament, Fazela investigated more than 70 cases against Members of Parliament who breached the Code of Conduct.
She led a review of Parliament and the extent to which it implemented its constitutional mandates. She innovated oversight components for the “Taking Parliament to the People” program. She led Parliament RSA’s response to the African Peer Review mechanism.
Previously, as Head of Administration and Finance at the Constitutional Assembly, she was part of the team that established the first non-racial administrative systems for the democratic era. Her professional journey is rooted in her foundational role as a full-time activist within the United Democratic Front, dedicated to the birth of a free South Africa.
